RefAware Release Notes

November 2008

General Enhancements

New Reference Alerts via RSS Feeds

In addition to RefAware’s email alerts feature, now RefAware automatically creates RSS Feeds for each of your Search Profiles (formerly known as Search Strategies) so you can receive your alerts using RSS technology.  These RSS Feeds can be added to any RSS feed reader (including RefWorks integrated feed reader) for viewing some of your unread references.  Feed size and time span are established in your Preferences (formerly known as the Profile area).  Just look for the orange RSS icon in the bottom left corner of your Search Profile results view or included in your email alerts to get started!

Improved Email Alerts

RefAware’s email alerts have also been enhanced.  Alerts will now include actual search results (from 10 to 100 references per strategy, based on your selection in the Preferences area) and you can choose how the references are displayed (links back to your Search Profile, in a basic citation format or in a RefWorks Tagged Format), whether you want all search results combined into a single email or sent separately for each search profile, as well as the time span for new references.  Email alerts also include links to RSS Feeds for each search profile.

Enhanced Display Performance

RefAware Search Profile results are now retrieved using asynchronous technology allowing you to immediately work with the newest references while additional results continue to be retrieved.

Miscellaneous Enhancements

Changes in Terminology

As mentioned above, we have changed some terminology based on user feedback.  Search Strategies are now known as Search Profiles and the Profile area (where your default disciplines, account information, email alert preferences, etc. are located) is now known as the Preferences area.

General Enhancements

Ability To Create Custom Source Sets for Searching

In addition to being able to exclude specific journals from a search strategy, you will now be able to create Custom Source Sets for inclusion in your strategy.  These Custom Source Sets include the sources you select from our vast list and can be selected for searching just as you would a discipline.  Custom Source Sets are created in the Profile area and are then available on the Search Strategy Creation page or in the Edit Strategy mode for inclusion in your search strategy.

Links to Author(s) Profiles in COS Scholar Universe

RefAware now includes a new feature that can provide you with meaningful information about the author(s) behind the publications in your search strategy results.  Using  COS Scholar Universe, RefAware will display author names in the reference pane in blue -- indicating a potential match has been found.  Clicking on the author name displays possible matches.  The profile information includes the author’s affiliation details, a listing of their recent publications (up to 5) and links to co-authored profiles.

Automatic Display of Images

RefAware will now include images related to search results.  If the image is sent via RSS Feed it will be displayed in the reference pane for viewing.

Increase in Number of Search Strategies per Account

We have increased the total number of search strategies you can store in RefAware from 10 to 30, giving you even greater searching power!
