Viewing Search Profile Results

Each time you log in to your RefAware account, your searches are run to bring you the most recent results. Search results are then displayed for you to view, read in full-text (if available) and export.  RefAware also has an alerting feature that allows you to receive notification of new search results by email or by RSS Feed.  Click here for more information on alerts.

RefAware allows you to create up to 30 search profiles.  Each search profile appears in a tab displayed across the top or on the left-hand side, depending on your viewing preference set in the Preferences area.

Search profiles have a limit of 5,000 records per profile.  If the search retrieves more than 5,000 records, the most recent 5,000 are displayed.

You can navigate between search profiles by clicking on the tabs and you determine which search profile is your default profile which RefAware will open to.  You can change your default profile by selecting the Default Profile option in the edit mode.

The main viewing area of your search profile results is divided into two areas:

The size of each viewing pane can be adjusted by clicking on the blue separator bar (with the five dots "....." on it).   Dragging this bar up or down increases/decreases the size of the viewing panes for the remainder of your session. Once you log out of RefAware, the panes return to their default display size.

Viewing a reference

By default, the first reference in your search results list is displayed in the top pane.  You can change what displays by selecting a different reference from your search results or by clicking on the arrow to advance to the next reference.

You may also use "Quick Keys" (keyboard short-cuts) to navigate through your search profile results:

Each reference may display:

Note:  Reference data varies -- not all references will have every item listed above.

Some author names may be displayed in blue which indicates possible matches to profiles in the COS Scholar Universe database.  Clicking on the author name displays the possible matching names which you can then click on to link to the free version of the scholar profile(s) in the COS Scholar Universe database.

In addition, you may see a View Full Text link which take you to the data source website.  If you have access to the particular data vendor, you'll be able to view the full text.  You may also see an Open URL resolver link or icon -- if your organization has included this information.

Search results display the last 90 days worth of content with unread content displayed in it's own tab. There are no records stored in RefAware.

If the search result retrieved is pre-publication, it is noted in the source line.

Working with your Search Results List

Each time your search profile is run, RefAware displays your results in the bottom pane.  You can determine the number of references to display in the Preferences area.  The default is 25 references per page.

Your results are divided into groups (distinguished by tabs):

Results are displayed in a Standard mode by default.  You can select a Display Mode by clicking on the drop-down.  The three viewing mode choices are:

Search results are also displayed in reverse chronological order and are organized by weeks and months (This Week, One Week Ago, etc.).

In all display modes, a paper icon appears next to each reference.   This icon indicates whether the reference has been read.  The green checkmark on the icon marks the reference as having been read.  If there is no checkmark on the paper icon, the reference is unread.  Clicking on the reference in the results list automatically marks it as read and displays the full reference in the top viewing pane.

References are marked read by clicking on them individually from the search results list or by checking the Select All or Select Page options and the Mark Selected Read icon from set of icons in the upper right of the viewing pane.

You can perform various functions for groups of references (selected, all on the page or all in the list).  Click on the function for details:

Note:  Selection marks will carry over from page to page.

At the bottom of the search results list, you can modify the page size, by selecting 10, 25, 50 or 100 from the drop-down.
